Working Time Rules for Self Employed Drivers

From today, Friday 11th May 2012, Self Employed drivers are subject to the Road Transport Working Time Rules. UK Legislation has continues since March 2009 to exclude self employed drivers from The Road Transport Directive as debates made their introduction unclear.

Self Employed drivers are now limited to a 48-hour working time average, a 60-hour cap and breaks from work, in addition to the EU drivers' hours rules. The obligation to ensure that these rules are adhered to is the responsibility of the self employed driver not the customer.

Although these changes are applicable from today, the Department of Transport advises that the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency will be adopting a light approach to enforcement for the first 6 months.
